For the 1999-2000 growing season there have been some interesting changes with regards to fungicides and their labels. As far as new products, Uniroyal has released a new fungicide called Quell. The product contains the active ingredient mefenoxam which is the same active in Subdue MAXX. However, the formulation is a 2EC. This formulation is similar to that of the 2E formulation of the old Subdue. In ornamentals Quell is labeled for control of Pythium diseases.
A new combination product has been released by the W.A. Cleary Corp. The product is called Spectra 90 and it is combination of two very good foliar disease fungicides, chlorothalonil and thiophanate methyl. This fungicide has very broad control activity against a wide variety of leaf and stem-disease causing fungi.
Zeneca Profession Products has secured a label in ornamentals for it's azoxystrobin-based product called Heritage. Azoxystrobin is a relatively new chemistry as far as fungicides are concerned. This product will offer control to a variety of leaf and root disease causing fungi including rust, powdery mildew, Botrytis and Rhizoctonia. The label has a wide variety of plants listed. Zeneca's other good news is that Daconil will now havea 12 hour REI listed on the label of this popular fungicide. This compares to the 48 hour REI that has been on the label of this product since its introduction. This chlorothalonil-based product has good activity for many fungi and has excellent activity against Botrytis.
