We received the following letter via e-mail
and thought it was relevant to many Ohio greenhouse
growers.
January 26, 2004 Addressed to: Re: Removal of Geraniums from Medallion crop tolerant list I would like to inform you that as of this season, Syngenta has altered the language for Medallion Fungicide pertaining to its use on geraniums. For your convenience, we have included a copy of the currently approved Medallion label. On the previous label, geraniums were listed in the table for plants on which Medallion had been tested and found to be safe. While internal data continues to support the safety of Medallion on this crop, growers have voiced some concerns over the past years regarding its use and safety on geraniums. Growers who voiced concerns had experienced some stunting on some varieties grown under certain conditions while using Medallion. Upon investigation of these concerns, they have been traced back to overdose or misapplication issues with individual growers. Our investigations have also indicated that geraniums exhibit a lower tolerance to misapplication and higher use rates (which result in product rates applied above that indicated on the label) than other ornamental crops. Syngenta feels that, based on this lower safety factor with geraniums, it is in growers best interests to understand these issues and utilize other effective compounds for their geranium disease control programs in the future. This will eliminate any potential for growers to experience crop stunting due to over application or poor spraying techniques. On the revised label, we have removed geraniums from the table for plants on which Medallion has been tested and found to be safe. Further, we have modified the warning statement following that table to read, Note: "Foliar or drench applications to some Geranium varieties may cause stunting or chlorosis at higher rates. Responses may vary depending on environmental conditions. Medallion should be tested on a limited area to evaluate for any possible damage before proceeding with treatment of the entire crop." We ask that you please communicate this label change to those in your organization that may be involved with or make recommendations for geranium production programs. Should you have any additional questions, please feel free to call the Syngenta Customer Resource Center at 866-SYN-GENT(A) (866-796-4368). Please remember to read and follow all label directions.
